For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable. (Romans 11:29)
No, it doesn’t always go as planned. It doesn’t always end as we wish. Life can get quite messy indeed.
For many, hearts hurt at the perfectly pictured sermon that makes sure they feel less loved, less holy, and rejected by God. For many, their kids do not end up following Christ although they were trained up well. Some walk through divorces as the sword of truth divides loyalties, and well, not every family is the well put together picture of Christianity.
If this is you, let me tell you something. It does not lessen the call of God on your life. Nor does it cancel God’s favor on you. The calling and the gifts Christ placed in you as He formed you are irrevocable. Period. May this word alone cancel every word curse that has been sent to cause you to shrink back from all Jesus has planned for your dear life.
You, and I, are not God. We cannot force people (family or otherwise) to follow Jesus. This is the job of the Holy Spirit. We can pray for God to move mountains but ultimately each of us answers for our own relationship with Christ. We all have free-will. We can humbly and lovingly place them in the safe hands of Jesus.
I’m sure it seems quite easy to tell a husband, or a wife, to forfeit his/her calling if the marriage is not shining unity in Christ. I’ve heard many a pastor tell women, “If God doesn’t call their husbands, He won’t call you.” This is not biblical or wise counsel. I’m also sure it’s quite easy to tell a man or woman whose suffered divorce they can never preach a sermon when one hasn’t the fainted idea of what goes on behind closed doors. Unfortunately, we see this all the time with the women we serve. Many call for them to bury their callings in light of private storms.
Christ has the final word.
Irrevocable. Meaning, “not to be repented of.”
Christ will not take back what He has already given you. Nor should you have the need to apologize for it. For far too long, many have been made to feel they should not carry certain gifts. This is particularly true of the daughters of God. But wait. Christ is the giver of all good gifts! Not man. His final word is…irrevocable.
Time and time again in the scriptures we see Christ break all barriers to following Him. It would be truly a misunderstanding of the scriptures to penalize an elder who lives fully for Christ from serving as such if his, or her, kids are not fully in line with the gospel. Wouldn’t many, then, be disqualified according to our interpretations being preached today?
If that’s the case, many of the great preachers used tremendously by God would have had to resign their posts. Some of them would be great men of faith like David Wilkerson, Jim Cymbala, Kathryn Kuhlman, and Billy Graham. I’m certain there are many more. Some had kiddos who veered from a life of truth for a season while others have struggled through a painful divorce.
Friend, you are free indeed to follow Jesus, serve in His name, and step into your divine calling. If perfection was necessary, Peter would have been booted after the 3rd denial of Christ. Instead, Jesus prayed that when Peter returned, he would then strengthen the brethren.
Do not let others give you their identity of who they think you should be. Only Christ has that authority. No man, or woman, trumps the call He providentially placed on your very life.
You only have one Creator.
Follow Him.
Christ knows exactly who He created you to be.
And that calling is YOURS to possess in Jesus name.
