It sure seemed like the end of things for Hagar. Her life was not turning out I’m sure how she had planned. I’m pretty sure she wasn’t expecting to be used for someone else’s gain. This wasn’t the dream of her childhood as a little girl growing up. I’m pretty sure she wasn’t exactly overjoyed to be pregnant and used by her earthly keepers. I’m pretty sure the hatred Sarah now had for her was devastating since the whole sham wasn’t even her idea.
Now the man who had changed her life completely ruined her comfort, took her innocence and made her an unexpected mother was sending her packing with a baby.
What justice, huh?
But look at the Lord…
Just when the water had run out. Just when it all seemed to come to a crashing end. Just when she couldn’t feel any more alone and abandoned. Just when she could take no more defeat…
“God heard the voice of the lad.” (Genesis 21:17)
From Heaven comes the Angel of God saying, “Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.”
The very thing that brought her so much despair and likely much humiliation was now becoming the promise.
We see the God of justice roll in and turn things around. “Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water.”
Was that well not there before?
You see, He provides even in the desert. He makes a way where there is no way. Nothing is impossible for Him.
He knows of every situation whereby you’ve suffered at the hands of others. He knows of the uses and abuses. He knows that you live with the consequence of others’ selfish decisions.
But He has made you a well of water whereby you can have a drink that is life-giving. He promises to turn all things meant for evil for good, and out of less than desirable circumstances will rise a promise you didn’t expect.
This is who He is. The Master of any redemption story. His specialty, really.
Open your eyes now. Look around.
There is a well of water just for you.
You shall live and not die and declare the works of the Lord, and He will hear your cries just like He heard the cry of the lad.
