I find it is true that the eyes of a person can tell me so much.
I’ve been asking the Lord this week if He can be seen in my own eyes. Does compassion shine through as a heart shares its pain? Do my eyes reflect His heart to those who’ve yet to meet Him?
The eyes of a person can also clue me in on their heart’s need.
I’ve seen the darkness of a demon in a moment through human eyes, whereby possession had taken hold and the wrestle between the human and the dark spirit was visibly tangible.
In one’s eyes can be seen the coldness of a heart, as well as that one overwhelmed by the worries of the world.
I’ve seen many now with pained eyes and the eyes full to the brim of grief. In some seasons, my own mirrored reflection showed the same.
Psa 38:10 – My heart pants, my strength fails me; As for the light of my eyes, it also has gone from me.
I’ve seen the glimpse of hatred and anger as piercing as a sharp knife, and I’ve watched as the spirit of jealousy overtook a once loyal heart merely by gazing into the eyes.
The “green-eyed monster” of envy as we call it is not quite so far-fetched.
The eyes can really tell us a lot.
I’ve seen the sorrow of suffering seasons through weary eyes, and I’ve watched hope fading as promises have been deferred in long trials.
Psa 69:3 – I am weary with my crying;
My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God.
One can see the captivity of addiction in the eyes. For held in an inward prison shows a red and hazy look. Clarity eludes them.
Perhaps sadness has kept us awake all night long and tears have left us red-stained from the long wrestle.
Pro 23:29 – Who has woe?
Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions?
Who has complaints?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who has redness of eyes?
Yet in a moment, I’ve seen the love of Jesus take my own eyes to see the need of humanity and hearts He desires to heal. From within my own tent, He can use whatever He wishes so that I might “see” what He wants me to see.
Revelation can bring a lovely light bulb moment and soon there comes a flicker of light in one’s eyes as Christ begins to bind the wounds and healing starts to come.
At other times captives are set free and the transformation is one of the light of Christ again shining.
Pro 29:13 – The poor man and the oppressor have this in common:
The LORD gives light to the eyes of both.
The sparkle returns to those weary eyes and resting in Jesus starts to bring life back into what once seemed almost dead and empty.
The eyes certainly are a window to the soul. It must be why we’re told to be careful little eyes what you see.
Psa 101:3 – I will set nothing wicked before my eyes;
I hate the work of those who fall away;
It shall not cling to me.
For the eyes carry what they have beheld into the heart and mind, and some things ought not take root in the temple of God.
A pride-filled man or woman carries unknowingly a loftiness in their eyes which is obvious to onlookers but usually not to themselves.
Pro 30:13 – There is a generation—oh, how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids are lifted up.
But the eyes of the saints ought to be able to see with the help of Heaven’s gaze.
Rev 3:18 – “I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.
Let us no longer have ears that do not hear and eyes that do not see.
