I really believe Christ is putting out a call for our faithfulness to what He is asking us to do. We likely believe we are faithful but have often strayed to other things in our lives rather that the things He has asked us to commit to in any given season.
The Lord is highlighting a “take it or leave it” mode of operation. In other words, there’s no real zeal or passion to do His work. You can just “take it or leave it.”
The problem with that mentality is it robs God of His purpose in a situation and in the lives, He is working in.
Let’s look at a few questions to help us take a heart inventory before Christ:
- Do you naturally prioritize what God has asked you to do or is it always “if everything else gets done?”
- Do you have an unction that pushes you to it or has it become simply something you “have” to do?
- Do you miss it even when you’re not there or are you just as happy when you’re not.
- Do you do what’s best for those you serve or what’s simply best for you?
These are just a few questions I’ve had to ask myself from time to time. These questions I’m proposing are with an assumption that you’re holding healthy boundaries, getting plenty of rest, and not working out of a need for approval.
There have been sudden lightbulb moments when I have realized, “I don’t really want to do this anymore.” That in itself can be God’s removal of the assignment. There ought to be a Godly passion that sets us ablaze (or at least is still lit) for that which we are called to do in any given season.
Can we get burn out? Yes. But I’m not talking about burn-out. I’m talking about the heart posture where we’ve come to a place where we can actually, “take it or leave it.”
It’s worth self-reflection because if that’s where we honestly are then we may be delaying God’s best for ourselves and also for others.
If you, and I, find ourselves in a “take it or leave” mode of operation then we may need to simply choose to leave it…
