There is a time and season when you need to be very cautious of who has your ear. In other words, the influence over you needs to be evaluated carefully to be sure there is worthiness for someone to be given the blessing of speaking into your life. Not everyone earns that right and frankly, some will need to lose that right.
Giving someone your ear requires trust. When there has been a pattern of behavior that is opposing what Christ is asking of you, guard your ears. However, if there is a pattern of honesty again and again and a real desire to see you become all Christ desires, then I may certainly allow that someone to have my ear.
Christ is clear to stay focused and be wise with relationships and influence circles. The enemy can easily infiltrate any circle and take you down from inside the camp if you are not discerning.
Some folks prove they can have your ear and others prove that they can not. It doesn’t mean love has gone, but perhaps trust has. It’s no longer a safe place for the inner workings of your heart or God-called life with Christ.
Patterns are very “proving” to me. Quoting scripture and even preaching is only a shallow temp-taker. I look for patterns of how someone handles human hearts. If there is a discrepancy again and again in certain seasons I’ve learned to believe what has been proven, already, to me.
It took a long time for Jesus to teach me to be very careful of whom I give my ear. My need for past approval of man sidetracked me often from my loyalty to what God had called me to do.
If you intend on being all Christ formed you to be, you’ll have to take a solid inventory of your circle. Is it full of cheerleaders for the Christ in you, or full of seats at a table never offered to you? Is there safety to address real truths or an inability to have honest dialogue?
I need you to understand that Christ has a nameplate waiting for you already at a fine table whereby you and your gifts can flourish, but you’ll have to be willing to let go of any influence contrary to what Jesus says.
It doesn’t mean every situation was bad or that something went wrong. It just means guarding your heart will also require you to cover your ears to some voices. Not everyone will understand your call from God, nor do they need to.
So take it to prayer today and ask God, in this season, who has earned the right for your ear…then do what you need to do if you find God shows you a problem.
Not everyone who wants your ear ought to have it.
