Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life. (Proverbs 4:23)
It is a tricky thing giving your heart away again after a season of wounding. Just like a child touching a hot plate, you’ll lean into the possibility until that old sting is remembered and with an abrupt gasp you’ll suddenly step way back. “Never again,” you whisper.
It’s ok you know.
Some memories have taught us to guard our hearts much better from unnecessary abuses and uses. Far too often we gave our hearts away to unsafe people. So Christ had to help us learn what true godly relationships looked like. Both parties loving fully, nurturing one another’s hearts, laughing together and crying together. Relationships that stretch us to become all Christ intended instead of keeping us held back in some form or fashion.
We needed to learn that a breach in relationships would require much forgiveness but also a willingness to talk things through and rebuild trust.
Relationships that desire forgiveness without the effort of rebuilding trust will soon drift away.
Giving your heart away requires those who receive it to be trustworthy. Safe. Honorable people. Those who will guard you against sin, from unnecessary pain, and be your trusted advocate.
You’ll not have to worry about loose lips in a trustworthy relationship. Your processing of pain will stay hidden deep within their own hearts keeping your heart safe in theirs.
You, and I, weren’t meant to give our hearts away to everyone and not everyone can be in your inner circle.
It is a dangerous thing to be too carefree with your heart giving for the enemy longs to wound it beyond repair and stunt your ministry endeavors. For a wounded heart, unhealed will seep behaviors and fruits of a spirit not of the Holy Ghost.
Pressure will explode all uncleanness and desperation that resides hidden within our own hearts. When this happens it is best to bow to the Almighty’s revelation rather than run from or dismiss it. It will cost you greatly if you do.
So guard your hearts diligently so that life can freely flow like that spring we read about. Seek the safe ground rooted in the heart of Christ when giving your heart away to others.
And remember, there is one true safe place to give your heart away. It’s a place that will never fail you. It is the heart of Christ. In His lap is complete safety for your every need.
