As I’m sitting here praying, I find myself overwhelmed with something we discussed in last night’s group meeting.
We talked about serving others. While you’re waiting, serve. While you’re in transition, serve. While you’re in the hallway, serve.
Can I be honest that so often we desire God to serve us instead of us serving Him and others?
I asked the group last night, “What are you in it for?”
Are we a people who just wanna get from God rather than give to God?
Serving is “others-focused” rather than self-serving which is “self-focused.”
I have found that very often my “serving” of others leads me right to the next assignment.
If I had been idle and waiting on the next big thing rather than serving where I could I might have missed some sweet God appointments.
I shared with them a story I heard from Jim Cymbala. A woman had come to their church and was a great singer. She got into the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. He didn’t feel she was ready for a solo yet although she was a gifted singer. One day he looked into the sanctuary and she was cleaning up after a service with no prompting from anyone. That was the day he said she was ready to become a soloist because she had first become a servant.
Sometimes God is simply looking to see if we can be trusted with His prized possessions. He will need to see our motives and hidden agendas. Are we self-focused or others-focused?
Service will look different for everyone because our sphere of influences are different.
What if David had not been obedient to take lunch to his brothers that day? He would not have stepped into his divine destiny of slaying Goliath.
Sometimes the “menial and mundane” is what unexpectedly leads to the miracle.
What I know for certain is that when God sees a servant’s heart, He will always use it.
